The quote above from the late Nicholas Tomalin appeared in the Sunday Times magazine in 1969. Tomalin, an investigative journalist and war correspondent, was killed in October 1973, aged 41, in the Golan Heights while covering the Yom Kippur War between Israel and Syria. Was he serious about his view on journalists? Was he right? Just what is good journalism? Is it a noble calling or a sleazy trade? Has digital made journalism redundant, or more important than ever?
