Your online guide to journalism

The only qualities essential for real success in journalism are rat-like cunning, a plausible manner, and a little literary ability - Nicholas Tomalin

Ed OldfieldBy Ed Oldfield

Are you considering a career in journalism, starting out as a trainee or student, or interested in training issues? Then this website is for you. There's news, advice, tips from experts, a list of courses, and a bookshop with specially selected titles. There's a link to my blog on journalism and a forum where you can get answers to your questions or join a debate. And you can comment on selected articles around the site, including this one.

The quote above from the late Nicholas Tomalin appeared in the Sunday Times magazine in 1969. Tomalin, an investigative journalist and war correspondent, was killed in October 1973, aged 41, in the Golan Heights while covering the Yom Kippur War between Israel and Syria. Was his serious about his view on journalists? Was he right? Just what is good journalism? Is it a noble calling or a sleazy trade? Has digital made journalism redundant, or more important than ever? Welcome to the debate. Just remember, as Guardian editor CP Scott said, Comment is free, but facts are sacred.
